A SPECIAL meeting will be held tonight (Tuesday) so councillors can answer further questions about plans to close three schools in Medway.
More than 40 questions were tabled for councillors during a full meeting on June 18, but only 22 were answered.
As a result, Medway’s Labour Group called for the special meeting - at St George’s Centre, Chatham Maritime, from 7pm – to answer the remaining questions.
The Labour group will also propose two separate motions calling on the council’s Cabinet to scrap plans for closure of the schools: Ridge Meadow and St John’s in Chatham; and St Peter’s Infants, Rochester.
A Conservative parliamentary candidate says she won’t back plans by Tory-led Medway Council to close the two schools in Chatham.
In a private letter to Cllr Les Wicks, portfolio holder for Medway Council’s children’s services, Tracey Crouch said: “I wanted to formally place in writing my opposition to these proposals.
“I believe both St John’s and Ridge Meadow to be good schools with a strong community base, something that is often under-estimated and devalued in our current education system.
“Both schools achieve good results, particularly Ridge Meadow, and therefore should be recognised as contributing to educational excellence across Medway.”
Ms Crouch, candidate for Chatham and Aylesford, was shocked to learn the Medway Messenger had been sent a copy of her letter.
She said: “I think it’s quite right that Jonathan Shaw (Labour MP) has been standing up for people on this issue but I always felt the best way forward was to lobby in private.
“I think the council are very aware, and have been for some time, of my views and the public’s, and I hope they will be listened to during the public consultation process.”
