A pub goer suffered a spinal injury after being attacked with a stool.

Craig Docherty carried out the assaults against three men while drinking at The Alexandra pub in November 2017.

After a few drinks, Docherty and co-offender Ian Spiers, began swearing loudly in front of children and were asked to stop by two customers, a court heard.

Docherty headbutted and punched the second customer in the face, causing him to fall to the floor.

He and Spiers kicked and stamped on the victim until another customer attempted to break up the fight.

Docherty launched a pint glass at their head and hit them with a pool cue with such force that the cue broke.

In an attempt to stop the attack a friend of the victim was hit with a bar stool trying to break up the fight.

A member of staff whacked a baseball bat onto the bar, which caused both offenders to leave the scene.

Docherty, of Railway Street in Chatham, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and affray and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 8 February 2019.

Investigating officer for this case Police Constable Magnus McAuley, said: "The levels of violence Docherty used against innocent members of the public who were trying to enjoy their afternoon is deplorable.

"One of the victims was left with a serious spinal injury however these could easily have been much worse.

"The sentence imposed against him reflects the seriousness of his offending and I hope the victims involved can take some comfort from the fact justice has been secured.’

Spiers, 41 and of Victoria Street in Chatham, was also sentenced on the same date.

He received a 20 month sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting affray.
