People living on a large housing estate in Gillingham say they are not happy about proposals to restrict cars parking on grass verges in the area.

Twydall residents say if Medway Council stops people parking on the grass outside their homes, finding a parking space will become almost impossible.

The council has given notice of its intentions to enforce restrictions in nine roads on the estate, which was built in the 1950s.

Roads affected include Allington Road, Appledore Road, Aylesford Crescent, Chilham Road, Eastcourt Green and Eastcourt Lane, Featherby Road, Teynham Green, Hawkhurst Road, and Mereworth Close.

The proposals have angered people who live on the estate as they say finding a place to park is already a problem.

Amanda Whittle, 53, who has lived in Teynham Green for the past 11 years, has organised a pubic meeting to gauge people’s views and to see if there is anything the community can do to stop the initiative.

The meeting, which is being attended by the area’s ward councillors, is being held at the Holy Trinity Church Hall, Twydall Lane, at 6pm on Wednesday.

Mrs Whittle, who is volunteer caretaker for the Teynham Green playing field, said: “I want residents to come along to give their opinions.

“The council has already implemented such parking restrictions along the grass verges in Beechings Way and did so in October.

“Everyone is welcome along as it is an issue that needs addressing and we need to find a solution to fit everyone’s needs.

“I would encourage people to have their say and come along and get local voices heard.

“What we really need is extra parking spaces being provided not less. These proposals are just going to make matters worse.”

A spokesman for Medway Council said: "Following concerns from residents we are currently reviewing options to help with parking problems in areas of Twydall.

"Residents will be fully consulted before any decision is made.”
