Police and Coastguard teams search the River Medway for a person reportedly in the water between Rochester bridge and the Medway City Estate

Police and coastguard teams searched for nine hours yesterday for a man spotted in the River Medway.

Officers were called at 10.41am to reports of concern for the welfare of a man in the water at Rochester Esplanade.

The coastguard spent most of the day scouring the river between Rochester bridge, where uniformed offers were stationed, and the Medway City Estate.

Medway and Sheppey coast rescue teams, Sheerness RNLI inshore lifeboat, the coastguard helicopter from Lee on Solent, Kent Police and Kent Marine dinghy ‘Bombard’ all took part in the search.

A later search at low water was carried out by the coastguards with nothing found.

Last night, a police spokesman confirmed no one had been found in the water, and the search had been "concluded".

It is not yet known if rescue teams will resume the search today.
