A fridge is to to blame for a house fire in Rochester on Monday morning.

Fire crews from Sittingbourne and Thames-side were called to St Williams Way at about 3.40am to reports of a fridge alight.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to enter the property and a fan to ventilate the building.

The house suffered severe smoke damage to both the ground floor and the first floor after the fridge in the kitchen started smoking.

It had to be evacuated and firefighters called the Red Cross to assist those living there.

A spokeswoman from Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it was unclear how many people were in the property at the time, but there had been no injuries.
