The Christmas show at The Brook is the perfect festive treat for little ones who won’t sit still.
Sammy the Sheep is aimed at children aged three to six and is all about getting involved. The biggest difference compared to a traditional trip to the theatre is there is no seating. Instead you sit on the floor and the show takes place around you. The play also moves between different areas and the audience goes with it, so you don’t have to sit still for very long.
As Sammy embarks on his journey into the forest to save Christmas, little ones can join in every step of the way. Not only can they shout “he’s behind you!” like at a traditional panto, they can also get up to dance, sing to summon the fairy, help collect ‘wishes’ before delivering them to the king, and hide from owls as they walk through the forest.
The show was really magical and had the young audience captivated. When you tell a three-year-old to crouch down to hide from an owl in the theatre, you aren’t sure how he will react but he was delighted to be part of the action and the look of concentration on his face as he carefully delivered a ‘wish’ was a picture.
But afterwards it was the funny bits he remembered the most. I was fairly certain what would be my son’s favourite part and sure enough, when I asked him, he replied: “The scarecrow with windy pops”.
