A residential street has been submerged and people left without water following a burst main.
Part of Albatross Avenue in Strood is flooded and several of those living in the ME2 and ME3 areas – which covers Strood, Halling, Cuxton, Frindsbury, Hoo Peninsula and Higham – have reported that water has been “dribbling out of the tap” while some have no water at all.
Bottled water is being delivered to vulnerable people, and stations being set up so others can pick up drinking supplies.
The issues started at about 7am.
One resident took advantage of the water and took to the street in his canoe this morning, but at least one car has been left underwater and a nearby subway out of bounds.
Part of the street has been coned off.
Resident Lisa Laverty, 37, barricaded her door with sandbags and a pumping lorry was working to relieve the flooding.
She said: “From about 6.45am we noticed there was a burst main.
“My other half phoned Southern Water and they were no help whatsoever.
“The neighbours have been ringing up. It's now quarter to 12 and the drains have just stopped flooding. But it's too late because it's gone past my damp course under my living room window.
“It's up to the second step of my porch and I've had to put sandbags down. I'm not happy. I'm not happy at all about this.
“We spent a lot of money on my house and now I'm worried that I'm gonna get a lot of mould from the damp.”
She said the water level had gone down by about three quarters by midday.
Another neighbour, whose front garden was also flooded, said: “We were all calling since 7am it took ages for them to get here, we’re down a ditch so it’s the worst place for it to happen”.
A Southern Water spokesman said: “We apologise for the ongoing disruption some customers may be experiencing in Cobham, postcode areas ME2 and some of ME3.
“The location of the burst is complex, but our teams have now isolated the main and once this is stable will start excavation and repair.
“As a precaution, bottled water deliveries are being made to customers on our Priority Services Register, and we’re working to setup a bottled water station.
“Unfortunately, due to the scale of the burst, a small number of properties in the area have been flooded.
“Our customer support teams are working with householders to support them. Anyone impacted should contact their own insurers in the first instance as they will have access to the support needed.”
