A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court accused of robbery after security staff delivering money to a bank were robbed of cash.

The incident happened outside the Walderslade village branch of the HSBC yesterday morning.

Caniggia Jarrett, 24, of Peabody Hill, London, was charged with robbery and was remanded in custody after his appearance before Medway magistrates.

Police said they were continuing to search for a second suspect.

No weapons were used but one of the staff working for security company G4S was said to have been slightly injured.

Shoppers and traders reported seeing several police cars in the vicinity and the area around the bank was cordoned off as investigations were carried out.

The robbery happened about 9.40am and a delivery driver was slightly injured when he was allegedly punched in the face.

The pair made off with an unknown amount inside a cash box.

The incident shocked villagers who were getting their morning papers at the nearby Co-op store.

One pensioner, who lives in Boxley Road and asked not to be named, said: “I popped down to the village to get my paper and could see the area outside the bank had been taped off by police.

"There was a forensic officer carrying out their investigation on the street and a forensic van was parked nearby.

“There was also two other police vehicles parked up nearby, but when I went back down later, they had all finished and the tape was gone and it was as if nothing had gone on there.”

Jarrett's case was sent to the crown court to be dealt with and he will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court, on Friday, January 8.
