An elderly man and his daughter were treated for burns after a tea towel left near an oven caught fire.

Firefighters from Strood were called to a home in Fleet Road, Rochester, on Monday at about 3pm.

A fire alarm alerted the occupants - a 76-year-old man and his daughter.

The man was treated for for minor burns by paramedics.

It is believed he received the injury triying to put it out the fire.

It has prompted firefighters to remind people not to cooking unattended.

Watch manager Martin Simmons from Strood fire station, said: “We urge all residents to be careful with their cooking and make sure they have a working alarm or they might not be as fortunate.”

Advice from the fire service is

Take pans off the heat if you leave the room.

Turn saucepan handles so that they don’t stick out from the hob

Never fill a pan more than one third full of fat or oil. If the oil starts to smoke, do not begin cooking - remove from the heat and leave it to cool

Keep the oven, hob and grill clean - a build up of fat and grease can easily catch fire

Don't cook after heavy drinking.

Fit smoke alarms on every floor of your home, and test the batteries regularly.
