Rooftop protest at HMP Rochester ends

An inmate has ended his rooftop protest at a Rochester prison.

The topless prisoner, believed to be 33, was spotted on the roof of HMP Rochester in Fort Road just after 5pm yesterday.

Friends say the man was growing increasingly desperate, and his family attempted to get in touch with him through the prison authorities.

But his protest was said to have ended peacefully at 1am today - eight hours after it started.

The prisoner had reportedly been threatened with isolation prior to the protest.

Other inmates were put on lockdown last night - confined to their cells while officers tried to resolve the situation.

HMP Rochester takes both young offenders and adult category C prisoners, with about 650 male inmates housed on the wings.

An inspector's report in 2013 found bullying at HMP Rochester was rife and there existed a 'Fight Club' culture among offenders.

Drug use and discrimination against minority groups was also uncovered by inspectors.
