The deadline for getting in applications to hold a royal wedding street party has been extended.
Medway Council initially said organisers of events to celebrate the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton must put in their requests for road closures by last Friday. But a late rush of enquiries has led to officers extending the deadline to March 28. They have also decided that road closures can stay in place until 9pm on Friday, April 29 so parties can go on for longer.
Medway Council’s community director Robin Cooper said: “Interest in the royal wedding has intensified. We have received a number of enquiries from residents interested in organising street parties. We want everyone to celebrate this great occasion safely and enjoyably, so we will provide as much help and advice as we can.”
A council spokesman said it was helping cut costs by providing signs and cones free of charge, as well as reimbursing “reasonable costs” to cover public liability insurance. She insisted the arrangements were needed so that the correct signs are used, safety was checked and there were alternative routes for traffic. Site visits can be carried out so that organisers can get advice in person.
Former deputy mayor Cllr Steve Kearney (Lib Dem) said: “The whole thing has been cloaked in too much bureaucracy. We should have the council providing signs, railings and tables and turning our High Streets into street party venues.”
To apply for a road closure, contact Medway Council’s traffic department on 01634 333333 or email traffic.management@medway.gov.uk for an application form.
Meanwhile, almost half the tickets for a village’s celebration have already been sold. The party at Allhallows Village Hall was advertised for the first time just over a week ago and 60 tickets were immediately snapped up.
