Officials were warning drivers of possible delays around Strood and the Medway City Estate on Friday morning due to emergency gas works.
Medway Council was informed that Southern Gas Networks needed to carry out the urgent repairs after a gas leak was discovered.
Work was due to start at 7pm on Thursday, which required the suspension of traffic lights at the busy junction of Frindsbury Road and Station Road. Manually controlled signals are being installed to control the traffic and the council said it would be keeping a "very close eye on" the traffic flows in the area.
Previous planned roadworks in the area have caused severe congestion.
Congestion on the city estate worsened this week despite the council introducing measures to ease the flow of traffic, particularly at rush-hour periods.
