A service to help late-night revellers suffering from the effects of alcohol or drugs is being launched in Rochester today.

The Safe Haven project, similar to the SOS bus which used to park in the Blue Boar Lane car park on Saturday nights, is being launched by a number of organisations, including the Medway Street Pastors, Medway Council and the Medway Community Partnership (MCSP).

The Ford Transit van will offer a safe and warm place for people to recover by themselves or wait for emergency help.

Adrian Tamblyn-Watts, Medway Street Pastor co-ordinator, said: “Cllr Andrew Mackness provided much of the guidance and impetus and Neil Howlett, the manager of the MCSP, was a great encouragement and support to Medway Street Pastors.

“We have had the exterior completely refurbished and it is sporting signage that makes it clearly identifiable.

“While we are able to deploy, we are still awaiting the funds to commence the interior refurbishment of the vehicle.”

The service will be launched at 8.45pm opposite the City Wall pub and then be a regular fixture on Saturday nights.

Crime commissioner Matthew Scott has provided funding and Medway Norse has provided the vehicle.
