"Give this school a chance"

That was the plea from parents duing a public meeting to discuss the proposed closure of St Peter’s Infant School.
Campaigners have been fighting hard to save the Rochester school since Medway Council announced in May that it plans to close it, and two others, to cut surplus primary school place.
Emotions ran high during the discussions which took place at St Peter’s Church in Delce Road on Monday night .
Julia Finch, deputy head of St Peter’s, said: “Parents are not going to walk 1.6 miles - 40 minutes, in the rain up a hill to a failing school.”
Chairman of governors Lawrence McVeigh told Rose Collinson, director of children and adult services for Medway Council: “You say you want high standards - how does closing a 'good’ school raise standards?

The meeting was part of a consultation period which ends on July 22.
Ms Collinson said: “It’s possible a different recommendation could go forward to Cabinet based on what’s been heard.”
