Police forensic teams
investigate flat

A second man has been arrested in connection with the murder of
a pensioner.

Officers were called to Copperfield House in
New Road, Chatham at about 10.45pm Saturday after a man was found
dead in his flat from a stab wound.

Detectives from Kent Police’s Major Crime Unit
arrested a 69-year-old man from Chatham on Monday on suspicion of
murder. He was released on bail on Wednesday until January 28.

A second man was arrested on Friday
morning.

The 43-year-old man from Chatham is being
questioned by officers at Medway Police Station.

The dead man has not yet been formally
identified, although he has been named locally as Anthony
Denis.

About 10 police vehicles were on the scene on
Monday evening with forensic officers carrying out searches of the
property, which was cordoned off, and other officers checking
undergrowth at the back of the block of flats.

Near neighbour John Pullen said: "I got
woken up at about 2.15am on Sunday morning with flashing lights.
There were three police cars, a van and an unmarked van and I
thought it might have been a raid.

"It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that a detective came round to
ask questions and whether I had seen him with anybody.

Mr Pullen said he believed the man's name was Tony.

He added: "The officer asked me if I knew Tony and I said 'of
course'.

"He was not a loner but you did not see him with many close
friends, he was always on his own when he was shopping, most people
in the block knew him, he was a friendly guy.

"We used to say hello to each other, I always used to hear him
upstairs playing music, all sorts, sometimes singing along."

It is believed the dead man had a sister living in London but it
is unclear if he had any children.

Area Commander for Kent Police in
Medway, Chief Superintendent Steve Corbishley said: "Officers from
Kent Police’s Major Crime Unit are following a number of lines of
inquiry in relation to this investigation.

"I understand that a number of
residents have been shocked by the discovery, but I would like to
reassure them that this was an isolated incident and one that is an
extremely rare occurrence in Medway.

"House to house enquiries continue to
be carried out and we will be keeping residents up to date with any
further developments into this investigation. In the meantime I
would urge anyone with information about this murder to contact
Kent Police immediately."
