Police have closed part of the M2 following a crash involving a car and a motorbike.
A fire crew and an off-duty SECAmb paramedic were first on the scene and an air ambulance has been scrambled.
The crash happened on the coastbound carriageway between junction 4 (Gillingham) and junction 5 (Sittingbourne) at around 6pm.
Motorists stuck in traffic complained that other cars were driving past using the hard shoulder.
The crash is between the junction 4 Gillingham turn-off and junction 5 A249 turn-off to Maidstone, Sittingbourne and Sheppey.
Highways officials say the road is blocked, affecting traffic travelling towards Canterbury.
Police said an ambulance was on the way and warned: "This will delay opening of the coastbound carriageway and lead to a short closure on the London-bound carriageway about 6.40pm."
Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at junction 3 and motorists are advised to go down Blue Bell Hill and join the M20 at junction 6.
Stranded motorists have been seen getting out of their cars to try and see what is going on, while many have complained on social media about drivers going down the hard shoulder.
The road reopened at 7.45pm.
