GILLINGHAM player-manager Andy Hessenthaler has praised his team for their battling qualities after they extended their unbeaten run to eight games against high-flying Leicester on Saturday.
The run looked in doubt after the visitors had scored twice in the second half to turnaround a 2-0 deficit but Gills withheld a late onslaught before winning the game four minutes from time when Mamady Sidibe slotted in substitute Rod Wallace’s cross.
Hessenthaler said: “It was a fantastic result for us. I was a little bit worried when it was 2-2 after being 2-0 up at half-time.
“We didn’t want to concede an early goal after half-time but unfortunately we did. But we dug in. Some teams would have folded after that but we showed good character and we brought Rod Wallace on for Guy (Ipoua) and it worked out well for us.”
Hessenthaler had special praise for Sidibe, who not only scored the winner but also played a significant part in the second goal when his goal-bound shot was turned into his own net by Leicester skipper Matt Elliott.
With Marlon King missing to a knee injury, Hessenthaler was delighted with Sidibe’s contribution against an experienced City back line.
He added: “I thought Mama Sidibe had a fantastic afternoon. He worked his socks off and caused Leicester lots of problems. Mama has certainly offset the loss of Marlon King. We knew he was a good player and that's why we brought him to the club."
