A skeleton washed up off the coast of Kent is being investigated by police.
The remains were discovered on Canvey Island, Essex, across the River Thames from Allhallows.
At low tide bones were spotted jutting out of mud banks near the Island Yacht Club at The Point, an area of open space popular with ramblers.
The grim find was made on May 25 and at an inquest opened this morning at Chelmsford Coroner's Court a coroner was told the person's identity and age had not been established.
Police are continuing to investigate the death which is currently being treated as unexplained.
A post-mortem was carried out last week.
Today's hearing was adjourned until November.
Inquests seek to establish who the person was as well as when, where and how they died.
Essex Police confirmed they were called to the area at 9pm on Saturday, May 25 following the discovery.
A spokesman said inquiries are ongoing but added: "A post mortem examination has been carried out and we await the results of further tests. At this stage there is no evidence of third party involvement in the person's death."
