Smokers are being encouraged to sign up to a campaign which will help them quit the habit this year.

Medway Stop Smoking Service, part of NHS Medway, is running Smokefree United, an online campaign to get smokers to stub out their cigarettes for good.

The Medway Messenger is backing the campaign which also has the support of Gills Striker Simeon Jackson (pictured).

And the organisation is hoping more people sign up this month as they resolve to quit during 2010.

Stop smoking advisor Tracey Kilbane said: “When the clock struck twelve on New Year’s Eve many smokers decided to quit.

“Quitting smoking means you’ll get more out of your game when it comes to football.”

Smokefree United is being supported by the Medway Messenger and we will track the progress of smokers taking part and talk to medical experts and footballers.

Those wanting to quit can sign up on the Smokefree United website. Members will also be able to represent the football team they support on the Smokefree United League, which is set up in the same divisions as the football league.
