A Sainsbury's shopper described their shock at discovering a snail in a pack of grapes.
Carol Valentine called for tighter quality controls after finding the creature in amongst the white seedless grapes she bought from the supermarket at Hempstead Valley on Saturday.
"I bought them and had a few from the top, but you don't always look at the bottom," said Carol, who works as a manager for Kent County Council.
"We were going on a journey and I thought I'll take them out and wash them. When I took them out there was a little snail at the bottom.
"My son saw it and said 'oh my god, look.' It was small with a white and grey shell. I might not have noticed it but it was only when I took them all out I saw it.
"It certainly put me off my grapes."
The mum-of-three said she recognised the risks associated with fresh fruit and vegetables, but that it was important to point out when standards slipped.
She returned the grapes along with the snail - which was still alive - to the supermarket this week, and was offered a refund and £10 'goodwill voucher'.
"You wonder what else is in our fruit and veg," she added. "I think they've got a duty of care.
"I think it has to be brought to their attention. I'm sure it can happen with fruit and veg, but I think it should be pointed out.
"They need to look at the packaging process."
"We all want fresh produce but you don't want insects and whatever else in there.
"The lady at the counter said it turned her stomach. It was moving."
A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "We are investigating the customer's experience."
