The son of a top Tory Medway councillor has been arrested on suspicion of drug dealing.
Cllr Alan Jarrett, the deputy leader of Medway Council, had his home in Ballens Road, Chatham, which he shares with his wife and son, raided by police officers on Thursday morning.
The officers seized more than 300g of what is believed to be herbal cannabis, three small bags of suspected cannabis resin and two small bags of white powder, believed to be cocaine.
Cllr Jarrett’s son Stephen was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled substance.
He has been bailed pending further inquiries.
Cllr Jarrett has served on Medway Council since 1997 and is currently the cabinet member for finance.
Speaking after the arrest, he said:”Anything that may or may not have happened is a private family matter and will be dealt with as such.
“It is nothing to do with my job or with my role as a councillor, nor is it anything to do with me or with Denise.
“It does not impact on the council or on the work I do for the council.”
His son, Stephen, 22, is understood to have left the family home shortly after he was released on bail.
A spokesman for Medway Police said: “Officers from Medway carried out a Misuse of Drugs Act warrant at an address on Ballens Road on Thursday, April 30 at around 11am.
“A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled substance and has been bailed pending further inquiries.”
