A Spanish tapas bar offering authentic Mediterranean cuisine and a new pizzeria have opened in the town centre.
Behind one of the new High Street venture is a veteran South American television correspondent who is banking on making headlines.
The new Rochester restaurant, called Ole, meaning Bravo in Spanish, has opened in the same spot occupied by the recently closed Rico Sabor.
Columbian-born Juan Carlos Bejarano, a respected Latin American journalist, has invested in the business which he said “carries on the spirit of Rico Sabor” but with an improved menu, service, and decor.
Officially opening tomorrow, it has already received rave reviews from diners who came along to a taster session on Mother’s Day.
Juan Carlos said: ”It was 100 percent positive. I was thrilled with the response.
“We are keeping the Spanish spirit alive. Our wines, beers and. cheese are being imported from Spain.”
A centrepiece of the newly fitted-out eatery is a giant mural of Flamenco dancers with Rochester Castle as the backdrop.
Juan Carlos hired celebrated street artist Abraham O for the artwork, whose striking murals can be seen across London.
A team of four chefs will man the kitchen under manager Diana Gomes and with Cristina Zapata behind the bar.
A range of traditional paellas, patatas bravas, and small dishes to share known as tapas will be served in traditional Spanish earthenware.
Special offers include two tapas for the price of £14.95 and two cocktails for the price of one.
Head chef Julian Ramirez opened Ricio Sabor in August 2019 when it took over the former Castle Food and Wine convenience store.
He opened a Mexican diner, Margaritas, a few doors away in June 2022 which has been closed for several months.
His business has been hit by poor hygiene ratings and non-payment of bills resulting in enforcement notices. His original branch in Gravesend and another in Dover are now shut.
He is no longer running the Rochester restaurant due to “ill health”.
Also opening in the town this weekend is Amore – an Italian pizzeria with three dining areas including a planned alfresco area overlooking Rochester Cathedral.
The High Street premises was known as the Garden House, which was an Italian bar and grill.
