A sports centre was forced to close after travellers took over its car park.

Multiple caravans were spotted pitched in Maidstone Road at the site owned by King's Rochester School.

It is said the group arrived last Monday night.

Ben Charles, principal at the independent school, said: "We can confirm that a travelling community arrived at the King’s Rochester Sports Centre earlier this week.

"We are working closely with the local authorities to bring this situation to a speedy amicable resolution."

The sports centre informed customers it is "currently closed due to reasons beyond our control".

In a statement, the organisation added: "We request that whilst bearing with us, you also forward any queries to this email address enquiries@kingssportscentre.co.uk.

"We will keep you informed of any updates via email, and our Facebook account and website. Many thanks for your understanding."

A spokesman for Medway Council said as the group was on private land the school was responsible for dealing with the alleged trespass.

The sports centre has since confirmed it has reopened on Sunday and all activities are back up and running including the Easter Half Term Kids Club.

It comes after travellers were seen moving onto a car park in Rainham High Street on Tuesday.

Another group left Beechings Way play fields in Twydall on Wednesday last week.

There were about 13 caravans on the recreation ground for several days and Medway Council took legal action to evict them.

Travellers have also been spotted in Luton recreation ground in Chatham.

The arrival of the visitors at the green space off Capstone Road led to Sunday league football games being moved to other pitches.
