A train station has had its ticket machine and glass shelter smashed – causing almost £3,000 in damage.

The incident occurred at Halling yesterday afternoon.

The smashed shelter window left glass on the floor and the ticket machine – which is the only one at the station – unusable.

The cost to repair the shelter alone is £350, and replacing the glass on the ticket machine is £2,500 – but could be a higher amount if the whole thing needs replacing.

This has raised concerns from those who travel from the station who buy their tickets in the morning, as they will now not have the option to buy their ticket from the machine, until it is fixed.

It also means those travelling outside the hours the ticket office is manned will have no way to buy their tickets before boarding the train.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We received report of vandalism to a glass shelter and a ticket machine at Halling railway station at 4.33pm. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing."

Southeastern confirmed the cost of the damage and that the police are dealing with the incident.
