STRIKER Robert Taylor returned to Wolves today at the end of his three-month loan with Gillingham. Chairman Paul Scally confirmed the club would not be extending the loan after Wolves manager Dave Jones issued an ultimatum to either buy the striker or send him back.
"We have decided not to extend Bob's loan and he's gone back to Wolves," said Mr Scally. Taylor, revered by Gills fans as "Super Bob" could now be on the bench for Wolves when Gillingham visit Molineux for Saturday's AXA sponsored FA Cup, third round tie. Gillingham were quick to respond to last night's statement from the Wolves boss who dismissed speculation that the club would be willing to let Taylor play against Wolves on Saturday.
"The only way Robert Taylor will be allowed to play against us is if they buy him," said Jones. "Gillingham have given no indication about their thoughts on the matter and I'm not sure if we would be willing to let him stay for a while longer by extending his loan period."
Jones, under pressure to trim Wolves' huge wage bill, was ready to unload Taylor for a cut-price £300,000 after predecessor Colin Lee paid Manchester City £1.5 million for him. Gillingham sold him to City for a club record £1.5 million in November, 1999.
Taylor, 30, a former Priestfield crowd favourite, made 11 appearances for Gillingham during his three-month loan. He started the last three games but failed to score.
