Work on a new fire station is Chatham is almost complete with a fresh, modern design.
The former fire station, in Watling Street, is more than 60 years old and was in need of extensive repair and refurbishment and was on an oversized plot.
So bosses from Kent Fire and Rescue Service decided it would not be cost-effective to give a makeover, so decided to build a new station on the the plot and the work is almost completed.
The old building is still being used until firefighters are ready to move into the new facility and once they have done that, the old station and remainder of the land will be sold off.
It is expected the work will be completed by the smmer and the new station will see 22 firefighters and managers on a new shift system which will see crews based there around the clock.
The new building also houses the KFRS water services team and its technical fire safety team that supports businesses in the area.
Elsewhere, in Marconi Way, Rochester, firefighters have already moved into another new fire station.
It was completed earlier this year on the site of the former park and ride facility near Rochester Airport.
Not only will firefighters be based there full-time, admin workers will also be based there during office hours.
Both new stations have been built to the latest environmental designs and incorporate technology such as underfloor heating, low energy use lighting and more.
The Marconi Way station also has a road safety experience which will provide a platform for give young people essential road stills.
Schools and colleges will be able to go along to the site for supervised educational visits.
