A Mediterranean grill house has been given permission to open in the former NatWest bank in Rochester High Street.

The name of the restaurant has not yet been revealed but blueprints show there will be a charcoal grill in the centre of the room.

There will also be a takeaway section but, under council rules, it will not operate between noon and 5pm because it is within 400m of a school.

A planning condition also states takeaways must be collection only.

The restaurant will be open from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 10pm on Sundays.

It will employ three full-time and three part-time staff.

An old public toilet could also be transformed into a micro pub if plans are approved by Medway Council.

The building is in the viaduct arch on the opposite side of the bridge to the former Chatham fire station, underneath New Road.

An application for change of use for the premises has been submitted to the council and is likely to be decided by officers by the end of September.

The toilets closed to the public in 2000 but were still available to customers of the neighbouring barbers shop, which closed in 2010.
