Did you serve in the Royal Navy in Chatham? Or were you employed at Chatham Dockyard? Do you have any tattoos to commemorate this time?
If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust would love to hear from you.
The town, rich in maritime history has a long tradition with tattooing.
From Saturday, March 21 to Sunday, June 14, Chatham Historic Dockyard will host a new exhibition: Tattoo: British Tattoo Art Revealed.
It showcases the largest collection of ink artwork in the UK and tells a story that challenges the most deeply-held myths and pre-conceptions about tattooing.
Tattoos have a well-documented maritime link and it is no exception that service personnel and dockyard workers based at Chatham’s naval base got tattoos to mark special achievements.
Examples, along with any interesting stories surrounding them, will be collected and used for an online exhibition.
If you have a tattoo that fits the bill, email info@chdt.org.uk
You will be required to include your contact details, a brief account/description about your tattoo and, if possible, a good quality picture of your tattoo.
Those with a significant story or interesting design may also be contacted for further information and their information shared via the Trust’s marketing channels.
