The teacher behind the country’s biggest school fundraiser for Sport Relief has decided to leave the profession to start his own business.
Angus Parker, who has taught PE at Rochester Math School for nearly 15 years, helped fellow staff and pupils to raise a whopping £300,000 for the charity over four years.
Sporting celebrities such as five times Olympic rowing gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave and top triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee have visited the school to mark its achievements.
But Mr Parker has decided to change his career after becoming demoralised with “outside forces” influencing the way schools are run today.
He said: “I will certainly miss the staff and, of course, the pupils.
“They are not the ones who get more problematic, it’s the influences from outside teaching.
“We find ourselves constantly clearing up the mess left behind by some decisions.
“People say Sport Relief was down to me, but that’s not the case. There are 10,000 people involved and now they are just one man down.”
The 47-year-old is not leaving the sporting field altogether.
He is literally getting on his bike to set up his own cycle tours venture across Europe.
La Vie en Velo has been in the offing for two years as Mr Parker test-rode some of the more challenging routes and refurbished a house in the Dordogne region of France for cyclists to stay.
He has also been building up strong links with clubs across the south east, including Medway Velo and Wigmore Cycling Club.
He plans to leave the school, where he also teaches geography, at Easter and has already got 10 groups booked in for his new venture.
Mr Parker will be running the business from his home in Whitstable, where he lives with wife, Kirsten, and three children, Alice, 17, Gabe, 15, and Polly, 11.
He said: “None of them cycle. They wouldn’t be seen dead near a bike – that’s just something that dad does.”
