Teachers have paid tribute to a Medway teenager who died in a crash last week.
Jack Burmingham, pictured, who was just 17, was killed when in an accident on the A2 at Newington, between Sittingbourne and Rainham, at about 10pm last Thursday, May 18.
Police confirmed the next day the teenager had died at the scene of the accident near the junction with Playstool Road.
Jack, a former Howard School pupil was a passenger in the white Mitsubishi L200 truck, which crashed into a parked car and ended up in a front garden.
Firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut another person from the vehicle and the road was closed until 7.30am the next morning.
His former assistant head teacher, Julie Parish paid tribute to him earlier today saying he was a “likeable and popular young man.”
Ms Parish said the whole school community was in shock about his death.
She said: “It was with shock and sadness that The Howard School community received the terrible news of Jack’s death last week.
“Many of us taught him when he attended our school, and remember him as a likeable and popular young man.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Jack’s family and friends, and with all those who knew and loved him.”
Over the weekend, thousands of pounds was raised online as tributes flooded in for Jack who lived with his parents Mark and Kerry and younger sister Abbey, in Plomley Close, Rainham.
Family friend, Lesley-Anne Bentley set up a fundraising page to support the family on Saturday and donations have now reached £3,275, well over the £500 target set.
She said: “Due to the tragic accident that resulted in the loss of Jack, a much-loved son to Mark and Kerry and his sister Abbey, we would like to show the family our love and support and just how much we all care.”
More than 115 people have donated and many have left messages in memory of Jack, posted both on the JustGiving page and on Facebook.
Lewis Jordan wrote: “Shared the same football pitch with you for three or four years. First person to call me LJ. Such a funny lad and will always have a place in my heart. RIP JB.”
Morgan Driscoll posted: “R.I.P Jack Burmingham such a nice lad gonna be missed, thoughts are with the family at this sad time xxx.”
Aaron Timson said Jack “would be missed by many”, Shannel Beecham described him as “an amazing young boy”, and Melanie Dorrington said he would be “missed dearly”.
Three people were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham after the crash but an ambulance spokesman said their injuries were not serious.
Police shut the road for more than nine hours and the accident interrupted electricity supplies to 21 properties in the area until 9.30am, according to UK Power Networks.
Officers are still appealing for witnesses to the crash, or anyone who saw the vehicle beforehand, to contact the police’s serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538, quoting MC/DH/102/17.
