Thirty schools across the Medway Towns were affected by Thursday's strike action organised by the National Union of Teachers.
The walkout, the first in 21 years, follows a dispute with ministers over a three-year pay deal. It is expected to be the first of many.
Two schools - Balfour Junior in Chatham and Robert Napier School, Gillingham - closed completely. Headteachers at many other schools restricted lessons to GCSE and A-level students only.
A GCSE art exam at the Hundred of Hoo School was able to go-ahead.
Striking teachers gathered at The Command House, Chatham on Thursday lunchtime for a rally.
The pub was packed with both primary and secondary school teachers as well as college lecturers and civil servants who are also staging walk-outs. Representatives from the Trade Union Council and the GMB union were also there to show support.
Kathy Gleaves, a primary school teacher from Glencoe Junior School in Chatham, also took part.
She said: "There are three people striking from my school today.
"I have been a teacher for 16 years and we have had to face constant changes to the curriculum and target setting.
"Teachers are now saying enough is enough. We have not taken the decision to strike lightly. We feel we are due a pay rise and we want the government to take notice."
Unions leaders have suggested further strikes will take place in the coming weeks.
