A housing association has teamed up with a charity which supports the elderly to make sure they are fed.
Medway-based mhs homes has begun a partnership with Age UK Medway, to support its meals on wheels deliveries for its older vulnerable tenants during the coronavirus outbreak.
The Towns' biggest landlord has committed to give the charity thousands of pounds to fund the scheme and volunteers at the company have compiled a list of those who would most benefit.
Each person nominated by mhs homes gets a hot two-course lunch and a snack pack for later in the day.
Age UK Medway – which has appealed for donations as it tries to raise £500,000 to keep its service afloat – has closed its day centres and is looking to support the elderly in the community in other ways.
Sue Rudd, supported living manager at mhs homes, said: “We have literally pulled out all the stops.
“We decided on Friday, March 27 that we needed to act quickly to help our most vulnerable tenants cope with self-isolation during the coronavirus crisis and we teamed up with Age UK Medway to deliver the first meals on Monday, March 30.
“By doing our bit in this way, we are also helping to take the pressure off Medway Council’s emergency support hub and local food banks, which wouldn’t in any case be an option for many of the people we are helping.”
The company's chief executive Ashley Hook said: “These are exceptional times and as a charity, it is entirely appropriate that we use our resources in this way."
The service will continue for three weeks but the landlords have dedicated to extend it to longer if necessary.
