Officers from Medway’s community support unit have spent time in Chatham raising awareness of domestic abuse.
Members of the team were in Chatham High Street, last Thursday to offer advice and support to people this festive season.
They were joined by colleagues from Medway Council and Caring Hands, a charity based in the town for homeless and vulnerable people.
The group were joined by another Medway charity, One Big Family, which is dedicated to supporting homeless and vulnerably-housed people in the county.
During the event officers and staff were on hand to help support those in need, as well as talk to people who may be facing domestic abuse but were too afraid to report it to police.
Sgt Adam Duke, from the unit, said: “While the festive season can bring a lot of joy and happiness it can also bring tension to families who may be suffering financial difficulties and are feeling the pressure of Christmas which can ultimately spiral into arguments and can lead to domestic abuse.
“This is why it was important for officers to be a part of this event as they were on hand to talk to people on neutral ground where residents may feel easier to talk about this sensitive topic.
“December also brings the cold weather and feelings of isolation to vulnerable people in our community and those who are homeless which is also why it was important for the local charities to be involved. They were able to offer advice and support to those in need such as where to get a warm meal or the steps to find a safe place to stay.
“I hope our presence helped many people in the community and I would encourage anyone suffering from domestic abuse to please reach out to those around you and to also contact us as we will always investigate and help to safeguard you should this be necessary.”
The team were in the High Street from 10am to 3pm.
