Tesco looks set to move into the ground floor of a new town centre apartment block next to a railway station.
The Pullman House development, which is currently under construction and will see 64 flats built, was first approved in late 2018 and includes two retail spaces on the ground floor.
A new application for details of one of the units at 88 Corporation Street for automatic sliding doors and two plant louvres was submitted by Tesco Stores Ltd on October 9.
The two commercial spaces on the ground floor are to be 371 metre square and 66 metre square, respectively.
The development was billed as being part of Medway’s first “car-free homes” when it was first approved, as the flats will not come with any parking spaces.
However, at the time, Leander Homes Ltd said this type of development had a market in the Towns, for people who commute locally or into London.
They cited the close proximity to Rochester Railway Station as a benefit for this kind of buyer.
The application made by Tesco for the unit is being considered by planning officers, who will likely make a decision without having to consult councillors.
Elsewhere on Corporation Street, the site for a five-storey hotel with rooftop terrace which was approved in 2020 went back on the market for £2 million.
The hotel faced controversy and repeatedly had to go back to the drawing board as architects tried to come up with designs which would get approval.
And on the corner of Corporation Street and Rochester High Street, new designs for 296 flats across four housing blocks for the former Bardell Wharf have been developed.
