Churches Together in Medway: A Bicycle For Two

In a weekly church column usually published in the Medway Messenger , Pam Tolhurst, Local Church Leader at Gillingham United Reformed Church, considers the power of two.

Seeing a father and son riding tandem recently set me thinking. Peddling away on the home-bound journey at the end of the school day they looked confident and purposeful.

How would you define the word tandem? Perhaps "together" or "two people working together, working closely".

Do you ever feel that you are "going it alone" on life’s journey? If you do, acknowledge that that can be a very lonely place and a good reason for the building of wise and sound friendships in life. Who is your best friend? Who can you confide in?

I invite you to use your imagination as we focus on tandem riding. The sight which I witnessed was an encouraging picture – clearly it was dad riding at the front and son at the back. Confident and purposeful travellers and a picture of trust.

How easy do you find it to trust people? How do you determine whether or not someone can be trusted? It probably won’t take you long to answer.

Having answered the questions, I invite you now to think on this imaginatively: Jesus and you are riding tandem, Jesus at the front and you at the back.

And then, receive these words from the King James version of the Bible: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6.

Riding tandem with Jesus at the front and you at the back – hopefully for you a picture of trust and a picture of the greatest possible friendship.

What does it mean to trust God? What does it mean to know that Jesus is your best friend? It does not mean that everything in life will be problem free. Far from it.

It does mean that when you know Jesus to be your best friend and Saviour that you can turn to Him through life’s daily journey, with its really hard times and better times too, thanking Him that whatever happens on the tandem ride through life you can trust Him to journey with you.
