Medway will be featured on the second episode of television series Secret Britain tonight.
Wednesday’s show focuses on Kent and sees presenter Chris Hollins visits the Hoo Peninsula and some of its historic churches there.
The show, which is now in its third series, explores hidden corners of the UK to reveal landscape secrets and undiscovered parts of the country.
Presenters Chris, Ellie Harrison, and Denise Lewis explore our garden of England county.
Chris, who was brought up in Kent, sees the area through new eyes and has a change of heart about the strange, bleak beauty of the North Kent marshes, when he discovers the secrets of its past.
During his visit to the area, Chris visits Cooling and stops off at St James’ Church which was the inspiration for the opening chapter of chapter of Charles Dickens’ book, Great Expectations, where the hero Pip meets Magwitch the convict.
Chris also meets Steve Martin from the Dickens Fellowship at the church to talk about the area and the author.
James Harrison, who is from the show, said: “Chris has a walk around the area on the with Steve and interviews him. We spent a week filming in the county and we go the RSBP site on the marshes which is a beautiful area.
“And we ended up filming in secret Second World War tunnels in Rochester.”
Other areas of the county featured in the show will see Denise abseil off the White Cliffs of Dover in search of a rare plant Kentish peasants risked their lives to harvest 500 years ago while Ellie takes to the sea on a mission to get access to Kent’s furthest outpost.
