Thousands of people were stranded on an industrial estate for several hours following a serious crash between a motorcycle and a car.
Traffic was at a standstill for more than four hours as police deal with the incident, which happened at around 3.30pm on Anthony's Way, Medway City Estate.
Many office workers have abandoned their vehicles and opted to walk home in the dark after spending hours sitting in queues.
It is feared the road will be closed until midnight.
Motorists said traffic eventually started moving at around 7.50pm and traffic cleared at about 8.30pm.
The traffic chaos has had a knock-on effect for people attempting to get onto the estate.
Soft play centre Monkey Bizz has been forced to cancel its Halloween party and reschedule it for Friday.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene and were assisted by the air ambulance.
While officers continued to investigate, drivers were unable to get out of Medway City Estate.
Hundreds of people stuck on the estate have returned to their offices instead of sit in the traffic, which is stretching as far back as Sir Thomas Longley Road.
Police officers at the scene have said it is likely to be closed until midnight. Cars have started to be allowed to turn left towards Strood.
Earlier this month council bosses revealed a new slip road is to be built to tackle almost daily problems on the Medway City Estate during the evening rush-hour.
