In March, Tony had life-changing surgery at Sheffield Children’s Hospital to enable him to walk without crutches.

At just 41 days old, he was left with numerous limb fractures, multiple organ failure and sepsis after violence at the hands of his birth parents, Anthony Smith and Jody Simpson.

He now lives with his adoptive parents Paula and Mark.

The youngster has completed several fundraising walks and raised more than £2 million for charity.

On Sunday (December 15), Paula posted a message on their Instagram page, explaining that he had broken his new hip.

She added: “I knew it was serious when I heard that blood-curdling scream from Tony. He never complains of pain, but this was clearly very different.

“I lay on the floor with him and his words [were], ‘I heard it snap, I’ve broken it, I’m so scared.’”

The following day he had emergency surgery to repair the fracture.

Tony was also visited by England footballer Harry Maguire and Olympian Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. Both are patrons of the children’s hospital charity.

Paula said it was a “long road ahead but one step further forward” and thanked everyone for their lovely messages.

The mum then shared a positive update yesterday evening (December 18).

“We have been discharged and driving home just 48 hours after major surgery,” she wrote.

“Tony just blows us away with his strength and sheer resilience to overcome whatever is thrown at him.

“We are forever indebted to Mr Fernandez and his incredible team and everyone @sheffieldchildrens – your care was impeccable and also Tony had lots of fun too amongst his pain.

“Now time for our family to regroup and get ready for the big man.”
