Heavy traffic built up around a business estate and beyond as temporary four-way lights were put in place.

The controls were set up on all directions of the roundabout which leads to Sir Thomas Longley Road and Whitewall Road in Strood.

UK Power Networks are responsible for the roadworks and in a statement it said: "We apologise for the disruption caused by our roadworks at the junction of Anthony's Way and Sir Thomas Longley Road, Medway City Estate.

"Engineers are carrying out repairs to an underground cable, to maintain reliable power supplies in the local area. Initially traffic lights were installed to enable a safe walkway for pedestrians.

"Following a site meeting with the council today we are removing the traffic lights and pedestrians will be diverted around the roundabout to improve traffic flow while we complete this essential work as quickly as possible."

UK Power Networks has confirmed that the lights were removed today to help the flow of traffic but work is scheduled to continue until September 28.

Congestion backed up along the A228, towards Four Elms Hill and over the Rochester Bridge into Strood. There is also congestion in the other direction, through the Medway Tunnel and up to the roundabout on Maritime Way.

Motorists reported long delays, with one driver being stuck for at least 40 minutes.
