A motorist clipped a pedestrian before crashing into cars and destroying a shop front when he "blacked out" at the wheel.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to Rainham High Street at 10pm last night after the trail of destruction left by the male driver.

A woman who was walking along the road was clipped on the arm and taken to A&E, while the driver was taken to hospital.

Graham Lancaster, director of Harrisons Residential estate agency was called at 10.30pm with the news his shop front had been driven into.

The man had driven head on into the the front door and wall, smashing down the brick work.

Mr Lancaster said: "I went straight there, expecting it to just be a bit of smashed glass, but the entire front of the shop was destroyed.

"I was there until about 3am while they made it structurally safe with Acro Jacks.

"The emergency services said the man had passed out at the wheel but they weren't sure why.

"He was driving from along the A2 from Gillingham and lost conciousness just after Hidsons.

"Apparently he mounted the pavement and clipped a pedestrian there, then hit the two Minis parked outside Regal Lettings and took a sign down on the roundabout there.

"Then he came across the road and smashed into my shop front."

The injuries sustained by the driver and the pedestrian are not serious.

Customers cannot get into Mr Lancaster's shop at the moment, but he said they were trying to keep the business open and running as best they could.
