A number of traveller caravans have pitched up on a field just two weeks after they were moved on.

The unauthorised encampment was seen entering the park opposite Bligh Primary School in Strood, late last night (July 30).

Multiple caravans can be seen from the street and have pitched up on the grass after gaining access to the site in Bligh Way.

A Medway Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the group and are following a civil legal process to move the group on.”

It is the second time this month a group have entered the park and fed-up residents have since set up a petition to replace the park gate with a fixed barrier to stop groups from gaining access.

It is hoped this will prevent vehicles from gaining access as those living in the area say this happens every year.

The aim is to “make the park more secure” by replacing the current gate by a fence or bollards. Click here to view the petition.

The latest encampment comes after a group were moved on from Hook Meadow, Walderslade.

Under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, police in England and Wales were given new powers to address harms caused by such unauthorised encampments and new guidance was published.

It comes amid a national shortage of gypsy and traveller sites with no plots currently available in Kent.
