Traveller encampment to occupy Wigmore coach car park for three months

A car park will be used as a temporary site for a nomadic group of travellers for the next three months.

Around 11 caravans have been placed in the Wigmore Coach Park and Ride Car Park, in Maidstone Road, near Bredhurst.

Toilets have been provided for the group at the site which has previously been used by people who commute to London on the Kings Ferry coach services.

There are currently no plans to turn the facility into a permanent traveller site.

Cllr Tris Osborne, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for community safety and enforcement, said: “We have a legal requirement to work with the group, and our partners, to ensure that they receive the advice and support that they need.”

It is thought some of the group are those who previously pitched up next to Laburnum Road Recreation Ground in Strood.

On Friday, the unauthorised encampment were served a notice to move on and they left on Monday morning.

A large convoy of travellers in caravans were also spotted on Monday evening near Bligh Primary School.

Cllr Osborne added: “As part of our 100-day plan, the new administration will be carrying out a full review of security measures at all of Medway’s parks and open spaces; in addition to conversations on dedicated provision; to ensure that we reduce the accessibility of our parks and open spaces to trespassers.

“We understand how important our parks are for the health and wellbeing of our residents and the annoyance of trespassing and unauthorised encampments.”
