Rochester Castle
by Lynn Cox
A Month of fun Tudor-themed activities for children will be held at Rochester Castle and Cathedral.
It marks the 500th anniversary of the accession to the throne of King Henry VIII.
The celebrations are part of events taking place all over the country and will include something for everyone, from Tudor dancing in the Norman Nave to brass rubbing in the Lady Chapel.
The activities began at midday on Tuesday with a costumed re-enactment of Henry’s first meeting with Anne of Cleves, which was put on near the War Memorial in Rochester.
Rumour has it that Henry VIII first set eyes on his 4th wife, Anne of Cleaves, in or around the grounds of Rochester Cathedral.
The legend tells he spied on her through a hole built especially into a gate.
During the weekend of Saturday, 5 and Sunday, September 6, a Mediaeval Merriment event will be held at Rochester Castle.
It will close with a Tudor-themed evensong at the Cathedral at 3.15pm on Sunday.
All events are free and everyone is welcome.
