Firefighters were called to a flat in Chatham after a TV went up in flames.
Crews needed to wear breathing gear to enter the property and had to give oxygen to a person inside who was suffering from smoke inhalation.
It happened in Jenkins Dale at around 6.40pm.
Two crews were sent to the scene.
A fire spokesman said: "Upon arrival, they discovered smoke issuing from the premises and entered wearing breathing apparatus to tackle the fire using a high-pressure hose reel jet.
"The occupant of the flat was treated by crews with oxygen therapy for the effects of breathing in smoke.
"The cause is not currently known."
