Two pupils remain under observation at Medway Maritime Hospital after part of their school roof collapsed while they sat an exam.

Fourteen pupils were injured - four seriously - after part of Minster College on Sheppey collapsed.

Around 220 year nine pupils were sat in the sports hall when a heating duct caved in.

Emergency services were called just before 9.20am this morning.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said four teenagers suffered serious neck, head and back injuries, although the injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Others suffered more minor injuries and a small number were treated at the scene for shock.

A spokesman for Medway Maritime Hospital - where the teenagers were taken - said late on Tuesday afternoon that two children remained in hospital for observation.

Swale MP Derek Wyatt visited the hospital this afternoon. He was able to see one of the pupils. The other is understood to be in a more serious condition and had been taken for a scan.

Kent Fire and Rescue, Kent Police and Kent Air Ambulance have also been at the scene. The Health and Safety Executive has started an investigation into the incident.

Speaking at the scene, Rupert Roberts, north division manager for Kent Fire and Rescue, said: "It was just pure chance nobody was killed - a pure dumb miracle.

"There were 220 students just starting their SATs exams when the heating ducting that runs both lengths of the sports hall collapsed and fell between the desks."
