Firefighters were called to a hazardous chemical incident at Lordswood Industrial Estate.

Crews were called out to a business unit in Revenge Road, Chatham, after two workers suffered breathing difficulties.

It is understood chemicals used at the business, which is believed to be a manufacturer of cooked meat to the food service industry, may have been mixed in a drain, causing a toxic gas.

Two workers became ill, and were taken to hospital.

Firefighters from Rochester, Strood and Medway were sent out to the business at about 8.12am and are still at the scene.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service also said police and paramedics were at the site and that bosses had also sent their chemical investigation officers to the incident.

A spokesman for SECAmb, added: "SECAmb ambulance crews have attended the scene along with our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

"Two patients have been taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for further checks suffering from the effects of inhaling a chemical.

"Others were checked over at the scene but didn’t require hospital treatment."
