Vandals cut down holly trees in Chatham town centre gardens

Vandals have cut down three holly trees in the centre of Chatham in what is thought to be an effort to steal festive foliage.

The trees, which were more than 50 years old, were felled in Town Hall Gardens in Whiffens Avenue, behind Medway Magistrates’ Court.

The first holly tree was chopped down on Friday, December 1, and two others were found on Thursday, December 14.

It is believed they were cut down so thieves could strip them of berries and holly for the festive season.

Cllr Howard Doe, portfolio holder for green spaces, said: “It is disgraceful that these cherished holly trees, which were in a conservation area, have been chopped down.

"We have reported the incidents to Kent Police and we will be keeping a close eye on the gardens.”

The public gardens were first opened in the 19th century and were previously used as a cemetery for St Mary’s Church in Dock Road.
