The woman whose body was found
in a suitcase on farmland was just 4ft 11ins tall, police have
revealed.

Officers held a press
conference today to appeal for help after the grim discovery
in a dried-out pond on farmland in Cliffe on Thursday.

Speaking at the conference at the cordon in
Buckland Road, Ch Supt Steve Corbishley said a post mortem had
been carried out on the badly decomposed body yesterday, and
forensic tests are ongoing to establish the cause of death.

The dead woman is believed to be
over 20 years old, was approximately 4ft 11 inches, with a petite
build.

She has a light skin colour and long
dark hair.

She had both ears pierced with a
single piercing in the normal place on the earlobe.

Police believe she had been dead for
at least two weeks and her body had been kept at a separate
location before it was found in the case.

They said the suitcase was dumped at
the pond, known locally as "the old pond" sometime after
late afternoon on Sunday, September 20.

Ch Supt Steve Corbishley, the Area Commander
for Medway, said: "This is a complex investigation and my officers
are working hard to identify the woman and to establish what may
have happened to her.

"We need the public's help with this, and we
are keen to hear from anyone who may be worried about a friend or
loved one who fits the description of this woman and who has
been missing for at least two weeks or longer.

"We also need the help of local residents and
regular users of the area around Buckland Road, like dog walkers,
riders and cyclists. We know the suitcase wasn't there last Sunday
but we need to know when it was left there. I would ask anyone who
has seen the suitcase since Sunday, or anyone with any information
which may help this investigation, no matter how insignificant they
think it is, to get in touch with us."

Detectives were called to an area
off Buckland Road near the village on Thursday afternoon after a
woman dog walker apparently made the grim discovery.

The scene was sealed off so forensic
examinations and a detailed search of the area could take place -
and parts are still closed off today.

Bob Worley’s farm, Oakleigh, is not
far from the Old Pond where the body was discovered.

Bob, 64, said: "My partner was told
by police that some remains were found in a suitcase in the pond,
which is dried out now.

"I guess it could have been there
for several weeks as the water level has fallen quite a bit in that
time, it must have been dumped there."

Another passer-by, who didn’t want
to be named, said: "We were going for a walk down Buckland Road but
it was sealed off and there was a police van parked at the end
stopping people from going down there."

Police are keen to hear from anyone who
regularly uses Buckland Road who may have seen the suitcase there
since Sunday or anyone who has any information about how it got
there.
