A new type of vocational school could be set to open in Brompton next year.

Parents and pupils are being asked their views on plans to build one of the country’s first University Technical Colleges (UTC) in Medway.

The proposed UTC would specialise in construction and engineering, with 600 places for children aged between 14 and 18.

A number of sites in the Towns are being considered, including an unused block at Brompton Barracks.

If the plans get the go ahead, the school would open in September 2013.

The typical day at a UTC runs from 8.30am to 5pm to prepare students for the working week and to allow for extra teaching.

Students would study GCSEs followed by A-levels and vocational qualifications, such as BTECs, and local employers would provide practical training.

Medway Council is working with a number of other organisations to set up the school, including the University of Greenwich, MidKent College and the Royal College of Military Engineering together with local employers including BAE Systems, engineering specialists Delphi, construction firm BAM and commercial property company Land Securities.

When applying to the Department For Education to start the UTC, Medway Council needs to demonstrate it will be welcomed by parents and pupils so it has set up an online survey.
