Watch: Biker dodges head-on collision with car by inches

A Rainham biker has issued a warning to motorists to check for motorbikes, after he narrowly avoided being hit by a car.

James Abrahart, 31, of St Edmunds Way, Rainham, was on his way home from work at Gillingham railway station on Sunday night at around 10.30pm, when a car pulled out of a junction in front of him, causing him to swerve.

He was driving down Wakely Road, when a driver of a red Vauxhall Corsa pulled out of Taswell Road.

“I just came along and was pulling out of the junction with Scott Avenue, I slowed down ready to give way, if I hadn’t I would have gone straight over her bonnet.

“This woman just came straight out of Taswell Road, on the wrong side of the road.

“Her windows were all misted up, I’m surprised she could see anything at all. I didn’t realise just how close I was to hitting her. She just looked at me with no expression on her face whatsoever.”

Mr Abrahart, who has been driving a motorbike for less than a year, added he has a strip of LED lights on the front of his bike, which makes him easier to see in the dark.

He is now asking motorists to be vigilant, especially when it has been raining, and the roads are slippery.

“The main problem with the cold is that windows are going to steam up. Demist your windows and make sure that everyone has that second glance, and really look.

“When queuing at traffic lights cars should leave enough space to allow bikes to filter through.

“My driving instructor used to test people when they looked in their mirrors. He’d ask them what colour the car behind them was.

“It’s a case of people are looking but they are just not seeing.”
